Real Alternative
Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player.
You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla.
Some advantages compared to RealPlayer :
- Quick and easy install
- It’s easy to make an unattended installation
- Proper uninstallation
- No background processes
- Use a player of your own choice
- Low on resources
- No advertising, no registration forms, nothing annoying
Limitations :
- .smi and .smil files only play the first part of a clip. This is only a problem when the clip consists of multiple parts. These files are not very common. These files do play correctly when embedded in a browser.
- The RealMedia DirectShow splitter does not work with streaming content. You must use the included Media Player Classic to play streaming content.

3)Joining or Splitting Files
In most cases when trying to upload a large file, most of us will split the files into smaller chunks because, so that we can manage the files we want to upload easily, most free hosting sites offer only small size per file upload, able to repost easily whichever part needs to re-upload and so on.And to achieve this without using video splitters,we use file splitters which are fast and easy to use.The below are the more popular and easier ones.
The File Splitter
The File Splitter is a free Windows program that will split any file into pieces of any size and later combine the pieces to form the original file. This could prove useful in a number of situations:
Suppose you need to transfer a file from one stand-alone computer to another. A floppy disk is often the only possible means for transferring the file, but if the file is larger than 1.44 megabytes, it won’t fit on a single floppy. Simply split the file onto floppy disks, and then copy the pieces from the floppy disks to the other computer and easily reconstruct the original file.
Many email systems place a limit on the size of an email message. What if you want to email someone a file that is larger than the maximum size? Split the file into pieces smaller than the limit and email the individual pieces.
There are many other possibilities for using The File Splitter. I’m sure you can think of a situation where The File Splitter would be helpful.
It has been claimed the The File Splitter is faster than HJ Split
The File Splitter vs HJSplit (Battle of 2 FREE File Splitter Program)
Download The File Splitter here:

HJ-Split
Freeware file splitter for a variety of platforms.
Why split files? Think of a file of 20 Mb, and try to send this to a friend. Using email this does not succeed, it is simply too large, and how to put it onto a floppy? HJSplit will enable you to split the large file into smaller chunks, which can be much more easily sent and stored. Later on these chunks can be re-joined using HJSplit itself or HJJoin.
HJSplit is available for a large number of operating systems:
Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Linux, Java, OS/2, Windows 3.x, MS DOS, Amiga. For the MAC there is a compatible file joiner available.
Created by Freebyte.com in cooperation with various programmers.

Tips to know
Presuming you’re going to download 7 links which is 7 splitted chunks of the file, make sure you download all 7 parts of them into the same folder,if not HJ Split will not be able to search and extract successfully.
Files that have been splitted by HJ Split ends with a .001,.002 and so on.You should not rename the files after you’ve splitted them. The correct file format for an avi file i.e should end in xxxxx.avi.001
To join back the splitted files, open up HJ Split, open the folder which contains all the download splitted files, you should able to see only the first file which ends with .001 Once you’ve click to join that .001 file,HJ Split will automatically search the other 6 hidden .002 -.007 files in that very same folder and start extracting.
If your downloaded splitted files ends in a .zip.001 extension,it means you’ll need to unzip them with an archive utility like Winzip after you joined them with HJ Split.Should the file for example ends in a .ize.001 or .7z.001 ,the before extension – .ize or .7z before the .001 is the extension of the arhive utility that was used to zipped it.So therefore you’ll the appropriate archive utility to do so in this case.
4)Video File Types
When you download video files from the Net,they come in different file formats.I will try to cover most of them.
Packed:
RAR, handled by Winrar or 7Zip
ZIP, handled by Windows XP nativelly, Winzip, Winrar or 7Zip
7IP, handled by 7zip
The thumbrule on this one is that if in the new folder that your download created are several files chances are they are packed archives.
The folder content might look like this:
movie.sfv movie.rar movie.r01 movie.r02 movie.r03 ---- movie.r59
SFV stands for Simple File Verification.
Some of the downloaded files in the Net come bundled with a file that has an extension of .sfv — this file is simply a verification file for the downloaded file itself.
SFV is basically a mathematical short checksum number based on the original file. When user downloads the original file and the .sfv file, user can use dedicated SFV check programs that use the SFV data to check the status of the downloaded file. If the SFV’s checsum data doesn’t match to the data that the validation program gets from the downloaded file, it typically means that the downloaded file is not complete or that the downloaded file has been corrupted during the transfer and needs to be downloaded again. Use QuickSFV v2.34 to verify your files.
Before you can do anything with these archived files , you have to unpack (extract) the content.
Unpacked:
ISO, IMG, BIN/CUE, these can be directlly burned to cd / dvd-r or you can mount them as a virtual dc-rom/dvd-rom
by using eighter Deamon Tools or Alchohol 120% virtual driver. The main difference is that Deamon Tools virtual driver
supports the emulation of differnet copyprotections.(safeDisc, Securom) and thus works better with DVD games labeled CLONEDVD
To Burn these cds/dvds you can use Nero or Alcohol 120%.(or yes i know a large choice of other burners)
DAA
Very hated format by most people .daa files themselves require you to install special converter software like Power ISO to view the .daa file format.
MDF
One of several CD image formats that Alcohol 120% can mount/create. Alcohol 120% is used for media backup. Iso Buster can interpret these files directly.
Fianlly we have the very common:
AVI
This is mainly eighter DIVX or XVID encoded video that is widelly available in the torrent sites. Recently there are more and more fakes labeled avi that ask you to download a special third party player, that is available free , DON’T! it’s a MALWARE!This file derives from the words Audio Video Interleaved. This file format is the child of developers at Microsoft. It’s one of the most common ways to store video. However, sometimes non-Windows computers won’t play .avi files.
I read int the forums that many wishes for some wierd reason to convert these avi files to DVDR. My first reaction would be WHY don’t you instead download the dvdr version of it, however i realise that some might want to save their bandwidth. Well before you convert to dvdr you might want to check out a few things and for that i suggest Media INFO. You should check if it is PAL/NTSC if it is XVID or DIVX so forth BEFORE you set your computer to convert it to DVD.
Note however that the quality will suck big time since both Xvid and Divx file formats are heavilly compressed videoformats.
WMV
This file extension stands for Windows Media Video. This form of video file was also created by Microsoft. Videos stored in this format can not be played on non-Windows computers without a free plug-in.
MPG/MPEG
This file extension stands for Moving Pictures Expert Group. This is one of the most common ways to store video files on the Internet. This type of video extension is not browser or video player specific, which is why it is so commonly embraced.
MOV
This type of file was created by Apple. These video files can only be played using Apple’s Quicktime player. A .mov file can’t be played on a Windows computer unless a free component is downloaded and installed.
FLV
Known as Flash Video File used by many video streaming sites like Youtube,Metacafe and so on.The FLV format is an open format that is also supported by non-Adobe/Macromedia programs; FLV files may be exported from QuickTime Pro or other applications that can export to the QuickTime file format.Macromedia was acquired by Adobe in 2005, so Macromedia Flash Player is now Adobe Flash Player.
SWF
This file extension stands for Shock Wave Flash. This type of file was created by Macromedia. You will not be able to play videos with the .swf extension unless you have the proper plug-in installed. If you use Internet Explorer or Netscape you already have the necessary component needed to view these types of video files.
RMVB
RMVB is a RealMedia Variable Bitrate file. This is one of the newer formats from Real for publishing video files, which is quickly becoming a popular format for Anime and Asian movie titles because of smaller file sizes and lower bitrates with exceptional quality compared to DivX, which has long been the standard for trading videos online. There are two options for playing back the file.
You can either playback the file by downloading and installing the latest version of RealPlayer, which is free despite all the shenanigans the Real site puts you through trying to get you to try the SuperPass. The second option is to use Real Alternative which plays back RealMedia files outside of RealPlayer.
OGM
OGM is the Ogg Vorbis video container format, similar to AVI or MP4, that generally contains Ogg Vorbis audio and a video stream that is often DivX, XviD or Theora video format. To play an OGM file, you have one of two easy options.
The cross-platform solution for playing back OGM files on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux is VLC Media Player. VLC supports playback of OGM, MP4, MOV, most MPEG files and most other audio and video formats. The most glaring omission from the list of supported formats is RealMedia files. After installing VLC Player, the OGM video file should automatically playback using VLC.
Magic ISO Universal Image Format File
Universal Image Format (UIF) is a compression image file format for backing up CD/DVDs
MKV
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free multimedia container format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file.[1] Matroska is similar to other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF.
And if you want to know more about file types, here’s a pretty much useful list i use to refer to now and then
